Fall… We’re more than a week away and, though we’ve been graced with amazing weather, you can already feel the change in the air. Not necessarily a change in temperature (though that’s there), but a change in our energy, our priorities and our days!
For many of us, the summer is a time of freedom. A time where we let go of some of our responsibilities or commitments, relax on our exercise and diet regimens, and take important time to live in the moment, to feel free to spontaneously go boating rather than go for a massage, because the weather is amazing, and enjoy all the wonderful things summer offers us. Like BBQ’s with friends and family, going to the beach, golfing, volleyball, and ice cream eating (speaking of ice cream – you must check out Carp Custom Creamery based out of Carp of course… unbelievable!)..
Then September arrives… Labour Day weekend, in fact. And suddenly the energy starts to shift. That last long weekend of the summer you can feel the urgency to have fun! As if the world is about to end. We must go to the beach, we must have lunch on the patio, we must go for one last swim etc etc. Cramming in the last bits of fun before, dun dun dun (scary music..) Fall comes!
I have to say, having lived in Carp for a couple of years now, fall is a beautiful time of the year. The golden evenings as the sun goes down. The turning of the colors of the leaves.
I also love moving in to a cozier time. I love the slowing of energy. The return of a more yin energy (much more conducive to the massage I most love to give, restorative, gentle and renewing).
I read somewhere this week that “September is the new January”, as in “September is our new New Year”. I thought this was quite fitting! September is a time of year when many of us do a ‘check-in’ with ourselves and get ‘back on track’. September is a time for routine and structure, for re-committing to goals, and identifying and aligning with our priorities.
Take some time during the next few weeks, as we approach the official change of the seasons, to reflect on where you are, and where you’d like to be.. in terms of relationships, career, health and wellness. And then make the adjustments you need to put yourself on track. Adjust your goals as necessary. Check in with your heart, remind yourself of what makes it sing, and do what you need to do to get there, to make it happen, to live your most blissed out and joyful existence.
And spend time being grateful! It’s so easy to fall in to the trap of the negative. “Oh I’m so sad summer is over”. “I hate the rain”. “I hate the cold”. Instead, find things to rejoice in, everyday! Smile at people more, give hugs freely, and continue to spread the good vibes. Seems summer is a time people do these things so easily.. keep it up as the seasons change.
If re-committing to massage practice is part of your fall routine, I can’t wait to see you at my studio! I’ve got a cozy space from which to watch the leaves fall, lots of tea to sip, and a warm blanket to keep you cocooned.
